I was Brave and I Won!

Writer: Sharon FennellySharon Fennelly

I watching the Netflix talk by Brené Brown called 'The Call to Courage' the other day. It is a great watch. Brene Brown is a university professor who studies courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy and is the author of five #1 New York Times best sellers.

She is also a mother, and she tells a fantastic story at the end of the talk (if you can't watch the entire talk, just go straight to 1hr 8mins and 45sec) about her young daughter that had to face a challenge similar to one that most of our children will face at some time or other.

I love the way she honestly describes how she as a mother dealt with it (and the internal struggles she went through); however, what is more impressive is how her daughter re-framed the outcome - "but I was brave and I won".

It is a story to watch with your older child or teen, as it may inspire them to look at challenges in a different way.

"Vulnerability is hard and it's scary and it feels dangerous. But it's not as hard, scary or dangerous as getting to the end of our lives and having to ask ourselves what if I would have shown up? What if I would have said I love you?... Show up. Be seen. Answer the call to courage - because you are worth it. You are worth being brave."
